500 gallons
500 gallons
I was thinking of making my pond 500 gallons - is that too small?
Re: 500 gallons
If you are just starting out that will be fine but in about a year or so you will prolly want to go bigger. It's an addiction and most always graduate to a larger pond. That size of 500 gals will be nice for some type of goldfish of your choosing. I favor the Shubunkins and wish that is all that I had now but alas I started w/12 feeder fish many years ago and so my pond is full of orange fish. I have a few that are white and one Shubunkin left.
Re: 500 gallons
I like a pond that is at least 1500 gallons. More is better if you have the space and time to take care of it, though. I have heard of problems with small ponds.

@darkmuse yep I think the bigger the better as it might be more work building it but you will get more satisfaction out of it in the long run

Re: 500 gallons
500 gallons seems like a lot to me! But I suppose it's small when you see a lot of the other ponds. I'd like to make mine bigger sometime but I'm going to work on putting in a bog first and see how it works. Good luck Paige!

500gl seems large compared to a fish tank, but it really isn't, especially when you start to add plants. I would go as large as you can afford to make it, money and space wise or you might end up like most pond owner, re-digging their pond several times

Re: 500 gallons
I agree with everyone..if you can go bigger do it…but, if you can’t like me then just stick to smaller fish (I have shubunkins) my pond was supposed to be 1200 gallons but the shelves took up much of the space and I wound up with only about 900 gallons..
