Re: good bacterisa

I always wondered about bacteria in a bottle but thought they could live on almost anything and live. I guess they still need something to consume and eventually, there's nothing left in the bottle for that to happen. Good to know.

Re: When to start feeding the fish

@darkmuse goldfish can find all kinds of goodies in a pond. Algae, plants, worms and bugs that fall in and bugs that fly at the surface etc. Koi I think you will need to feed tho as might not get full enough like the goldies. I can feed my fish and walk by 10mins later and they still will beg, it's...

Re: Koi Varieties

@darkmuse Here are some photo's of Shubbies as I call them. Not my photo's. Taken off the net. I wait to add new fish to my pond till the weather gets warmer, like in the 60's or 70's and the water is warmer so they can adjust better. Make sure your pond is cycled also. You can use something called...

Re: good places to buy pond fish and plants

I've never quarantined but do pay attention to how the fish are before I purchase them. Pays to know fish behavior and who you're dealing with. But no doubt something came into the pond that time! Thanks for the help.

Re: When to start feeding the fish

I usually start feeding when I see them swimming around and coming to the top when I'm by the pond is this the right time? I have goldfish and I hardly ever feed them anyways but if I do I wait till over 50f also. My fish have gone for years w/o feeding but now I like to feed them now and then as t...

Re: Koi Varieties

I like the different colors but know they can get vry large, so am sticking with goldfish. Shubunkins are almost as good as koi that way. I like the idea of having a pond full of Shubunkin's as they are so colorful w/the different patterns, like smallish koi. If I had it to do over that's what I wo...

Re: Pond is like pea soup

your pond isnt overstocked, so that is a great thing! The nitrates are a bit high in the pond, so consider adding some plants, a bog, or just doing a partial water change. Those nitrates are most likely why you have the pea soup going on. The other thing that concerns me is ammonia, any amount of a...

Re: pond plants?

@darkmuse Parrots Feather where I live comes back after Winter. It looks like it's dead but always makes a comeback and we have gone below -6f for a few days. It can take quite cold freezing as I have a friend who lives in MD and it gets temps pretty low back there for longer periods and lots of sn...

j.w wrote: Mon Mar 28, 2022 5:23 pm @darkmuse yep I think the bigger the better as it might be more work building it but you will get more satisfaction out of it in the long run
How large is your pond, @j.w ? Any pics? I agree about that long run value! Wouldn't be without a pond, now!

Re: good bacterisa

From what I know, a lot of the bottled bacteria sold by pond stores isn't even alive so I'd not waste my money.
